“You’re taking me to the beach,” I said as we navigated our way along the dark path with nothing but the moon to guide us.
Paolo didn’t say anything, but he squeezed my hand once more as if in affirmation. I don’t know if it was the wine or the darkness or the closeness, but this time, it did something to me. “We are almost here,” he said as we made our way onto the soft sand. I glanced around, wondering where else he could possibly have to take me. There was nothing but sand and rocky cliffs for miles in either direction.
Paolo let go of my hand so he could walk ahead of me, and I found myself already craving his touch again. I followed him along the beach to a steep outcropping in the rocks. He stepped up on it before turning around and holding out his hand.
I glanced around. There was nobody else on the beach in either direction, and the twinkling lights of the town above seemed so far away.
