Description
The Cup of Trembling is based on a tragic event that took place on the night of Saturday 4th July, 1976 in the city
of Buenos Aires, Argentina. A military (naval?) "task force" broke into the parish house next to St.Patrick's church, belonging
to the Irish Pallottine Order, in a well-to-do neighbourhood, tortured and assassinated the five religious who were in the house
that night: the parish priest, who had been denouncing the regime's excesses, two fellow priests and two young seminarians.
When the parishioners gathered for the early Mass the following morning, there was no one to open the church
door. The military authorities blamed a leftist guerrilla group, wanted the dead buried hugger-mugger away from Buennos
Aires, but the father provincial, summoned urgently to the scene of the crime, insisted on a fitting farewell in the parish
church, where there is now an oratory dedicated to the martyrs.
