Description
Moab Potash Road is a route that parallels the Colorado River as it passes through the Portal northwest of Moab, Utah. Along what has been called one of the most beautiful highways in the nation, you can view some of the best Indian rock art in the country, stunning arches, dinosaur tracks and vistas of the river flanked by majestic red sandstone cliffs. Designated a scenic byway by the State of Utah, Highway 279 is a multiple use area with opportunities for hiking, camping, boating, mountain biking, four-wheeling and road touring. This road guide follows Highway 279 along the Colorado River until the end of the paved section. The entrance is marked by a sign on Highway 191 approximately 4 miles north of Moab, Utah. This road guide stops soon after the pavement ends at the boat ramp parking area. The road past there is not passenger car friendly.
This book focuses on points of interest that are accessible from the paved road and gives GPS and mileage. You don’t have to be a hiker or backpacker to enjoy this book; many features are visible from road turnouts. Four-wheel drive is not necessary to reach the attractions listed in this guide. Some spur roads that require four-wheel drive are pointed out, but they are not part of the road tour.
