Description
Two graduate students in a university paranormal research lab become accidental detectives as they go searching for a woman who fails to return from her Caribbean vacation. They get help from a group of psychics known as the “Gang of Four” and a modern practitioner of witchcraft who is an app developer and entrepreneur. The psychics reveal that a karmic debt from two hundred years ago has put the woman on a path to danger. The witch helps find the whereabouts of the culprit. After some brilliant deductions, unexpected mishaps that turn their lives upside down, and twists and turns, the two detectives come face to face with a deranged killer and his intended latest victim. Just as karma set off the chain of events in the beginning, it also determines the dramatic outcome.
“Karma Dead Ahead” is not just another Detective Mystery/Suspense novel. There are a number of incidents that take place that humorously satirize the corruption and dysfunction of modern institutions — the tabloid media, celebrity worship, the scientific establishment, business and elite protection from law enforcement — giving the novel depth and comic relief from the more suspenseful main plot.
If you like nicely paced detective/mystery stories with appealing well-drawn characters and a plot that always keeps you guessing as it alternates between humor and suspense, then this book is for you.
A group of psychics called the "Gang of Four" and a modern witch who happens to be a successful tech entrepreneur, help the two young detectives, Sagacity Jeunesse and Chance Mankowski, by providing hints on what has gone wrong, where to look for the woman and who might be behind her disappearance. It turns out that she is in danger because of a series of events that took place two hundred years ago in a former life. These created an unresolved karmic debt that needs to be repaid and has now led her into a dangerous situation.
Sagacity and Chance are graduate research assistants in a university psychic research lab run by an eccentric professor. The continuation of his work (and their financial support) is always under threat from a scientific establishment that is more interested in maintaining official views than seeking possibly uncomfortable truths. Sagacity is always looking for ways to earn extra money and comes up with the idea for a new type of psychic detective agency. Chance is not nearly as enthusiastic as she is and becomes increasingly less so as events sweep them along toward an inevitable confrontation with a deranged lunatic.
During their search for the imperiled woman, an unexpected incident turns the two detectives into overnight celebrities. The press then relentlessly pursues them, determined to write a series of salacious stories although none exist. The media of course misses and fails to report on a much bigger and important news story right before its eyes because it is so focused on trivial gossip.
Sagacity, who is bold, beautiful, good at deduction and an excellent shot, is in frequent conflict with her more cautious and intellectual lab and business partner Chance. Together, they make an excellent team. Both are mistrustful of the local police on the island, who are indeed as corrupt as they appear. It is difficult to determine if their goal is to help them solve the case or hinder the two detectives from finding the real culprit.
Despite all the careful planning by the authorities, a number of accidents and unintended consequences still occur. The climatic resolution does indeed have a surprise twist. Despite what appears to have happened, the outcome makes it possible for one more secret to be hidden.
