Description

Plague
“I saw them coming from miles away: tiny dots on the horizon, clouds of dust trailing behind them. They came one or two at a time usually, but sometimes we’d see three or four together. In the old days we’d welcome newcomers with open arms and make sweet tea and homemade cornbread for them, but not now — now Nebraska is different. Every place is different. My mama would turn bright red at how we treat refugees now. But mama will never know. She died in the first wave of plague deaths, before they knew it was plague, before they knew where it came from, and before they began tracking the disease in people. I’m glad now, that she passed away so early on in this tragedy. That way she didn’t witness such extreme cruelty, and that way she’d never know what I had to do this side of heaven. But I wondered if she could see me. I wondered if she knew I was no longer Margaret Ann, but was only known as Government Employee #572611.”

Drought started in the West. Famine quickly followed on a scale the world had never seen before. But then plague sprouted and spread like wild fire. The government said it followed the exodus of evacuees from the West and traveled all the way to the mid states, so the borders closed, and anyone trying to get across and find a new life in the East had to go through government processing and testing. Martial Law dictated everyday life and individual rights no longer existed. The plague changed everything. With thousands upon thousands of citizens dead in the streets, the government gained control of everything, including how those affected by the plague were treated – if they were treated. “It’s for the greater good,” they said. But some believed even the sickest people had a right to live, and risked everything to see that they did.
