Description
The story of Margaret Hale and John Thornton by Elizabeth Gaskell under the title of North and South is a Victorian romance which was brought to life with the BBC adaptation in 2004. Those two characters were destined to find each other but as much as the reader or viewer realized this there was nothing but antagonism between them and they only found each other as the original story ends.
I chose to tell their story a different way and the first part “North and South Alliance†brings them far more happiness and hope starting with their first encounter in Margaret’s south and some months later, their formal introduction in John’s home in the north. This is a story of romance, awakening and marriage.
“Adam Bell’s Legacy†continues on immediately from the end of North and South Alliance as they return to Milton after a quiet wedding following the death of Adam Bell. The story does not stand alone drawing references from their first meetings and life for these two changes in unusual ways whilst their love for each other continues to grow.
John Thornton the established owner of two Mills considers himself to be the luckiest of men to have found, at last, someone he could love and Margaret is transformed from the quiet country mouse, daughter of a village parson, to the loving Wife John has always wished and hoped for.
For John and Margaret there are reunions, foreign travel, business enterprises, friendships and much more.
