This is an academic article which discusses Edward Said's theory of Orientalism through its existence in the cultural phenomenon of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy and its film adaptations. The article assumes prior knowledge of both the Lord of the Rings books and films and basic knowledge of the critical theory of Orientalism. All sources are referenced in the bibliography.
