The Cook's House: A Seeming Tale to a Southron

In the 1950s rural Mississippi Delta town of Double Shovel, young Albert Sidney McClanahan stands on the cusp of manhood. Yearning for answers to life’s eternal mysteries, he turns to Lucy, his family’s colored cook, for comfort and wisdom. He gets that—and so much more, which he appreciates only in later years.
