I have written a story called Myron.
It is a childrens adventure based on magic,Aussie intuition and historical fact.This story is the first of a trilogy .
I enclose the first three chapters for your perusal.
The story is based on a a magical cross Mjollnir found by a young girl ,Elin Thorvald on her wanderings around the desolate beaches of her hometown of Skane,Denmark.She slowly learns of its power to protect her from evil.She takes one of her fathers old boot laces and wears the cross as a necklace for protection.
She accidentally meets her husband to be , Jack Hepple , an Australian Naval officer on secondment to Royal Navy.
Jack is involved in the biggest naval battle of the World War One “The Battle of Jutland†as a gunnery officer, on- board the HMS Invincible.Intense fighting and salvos are exchanged between the Royal Navy and the Imperial German Navy. During a long and protracted battle the Invincible takes a direct hit in the rear magazine hold.Jack only one of few survivors takes charge in the water ordering other survivors into a leaking lifeboat.He spends the next twenty four hours clinging onto a wooden rum keg shouting out for help.
Marinus Thorvald ,Elin’s father ,a fisherman comes to Jacks rescue while having a luckless day fishing.For the rest of the war Jack is presumed dead by the war office.He becomes a deck hand for Marinus and by wars end entices Elin to return with him to Melbourne Australia .There they set up house in Nott St Port Melbourne ,Jack as a tug boat master and Elin a mother to son , Myron.
Myron is your regular 9 year old “Denis the menaceâ€.He has a heart of gold ,but always on a collision course with school bullies,school authorities and parental boundaries. When he is home from school his little mate Jasper the maltese poodle follows him every where.The dog sometimes saves Myron from some “sticky “situations.
Jack is your typical Aussie bloke .Knows his place in society and hides the anxiety (the black dog)from what he experienced during the war.As tug boat captain he is strict , but enjoys a beer with his crew after work.
As a husband kind ,strong,gentle and funny.He knows there is something special behind the cross that Elin wears but is skeptical of what Elin has said of its powers.
As a father protective ,supportive ,responsible with a touch of fun.
Every day the little rum keg that sits on top of the kitchen dresser reminds him of how he survived the perils of war,found a wife and raised a son.
Elin is a woman still coming to terms with the English language but loves the Australian way of life.Australians have a similar “care free†attitude too that of Danes which what made her attracted to Jack. She intermittingly would rub the cross if she can sense danger or uncertainty in the family.She is the mistress of the house,giving grief in a comical way to the men in her life ,Jack and Myron.
A cable (telegram) arrives in Danish ,marked to the attention of Elin.Her father is dying.
Jack decides to take the family back to Denmark,thats the least he can do for the man who saved his life.He quickly arranges passage on the RMS Ormonde, the only liner leaving in the foreseen future.The catch is that the only cabin available is a two birth cabin in the bowels of the ship in the crew -mans quaters. Time is of the essence he needs to take Elin home.
Myron who cannot bear to leave Jasper behind sneaks him aboard in his school bag.Elin has a premonition of danger and makes Myron where the cross of Mjollnir.The six week trip is a adventure for Myron as he makes friends with kids his own age and enemies with the chief engineer Skraggs.
This mean little man is infatuated with the teachings of Hitler.He runs the bowels of the ship like his Fuhrer putting fear into the crew.Upon seeing Myron he menaces the young boy with a spanner .The two have constant “run ins†with Skraggs coming off second best.
