Kaelin d'Cyir watched her father's funeral pyre until it smoldered to ash. The latest casualty to a century of warfare with the Legion of Bael, her father was the hero, the one who saved the Kingdom of Arturus, the difference between a victorious or conquered nation.  Yet, in that costly victory, everything changed. 

Assassins' blades that destroyed the few men capable of wielding magical power unshackled Arturus, bringing a freedom no one left alive could truly understand. They discover their former people suffer their own challenges of distrust and survival among the scavengers plaguing the former borders of Arturus and Bael. On what seems to be a routine chore, returning order to the countryside, they encounter the mysterious Jayd, former servant to the now dead Magus of Arturus. Both Kaelin and Jayd soon find their lives spiraling out of control, each pursued by a lurking darkness for very different reasons. The blackest secrets of the Magus have unraveled, allowing strange creatures to prowl the night with shadows from the past threatening to upend the land. Worse, the Legion of Bael, recovered from their own bloody wounds, eyes a weakened enemy, ready to renew the fight. In a world racing toward a new horizon, Kaelin, Jayd, and Dalus confront their own notions of loyalty, self, and humanity while survival and sanity suddenly seem so uncertain.
