Description

Fun with Mathematics is a series of booklets aimed at showing you the enrichment and entertainment value of Mathematics as against its utility aspect. The enjoyment is two-fold. The first comes from the pleasant and unbelievable surprises that spring up from here and there. When the simplification and unfolding of logic behind is explained, you just end up saying WOW! The second comes from the hands on activity by which you construct tangible mathematical objects. You would actually end up with a small math-museum of your own in no time.
Each Number of the Series would change your perception of Mathematics in a subtle but meaningful way. Some topics will have interesting information. Others would sharpen your brain and wit in addition to being interesting!
Several of the numbers would be useful for students and teachers of Mathematics who are looking for enrichment material for Mathematics Labs and Projects in Mathematics. For others, these would be a matter of pure enjoyment.
Strictly speaking, there is no age bar on readership as the topics are general and self-contained. However, if some instances of a theme uses relatively complex logic than some others, then we divide the matter into two categories viz. Elementary and Not so Elementary.
About this Number (Maths, Magic & Playing Cards)
In this first number of the Series, we present some amazing card tricks that look like magic. For example, a person selects any three cards from an ordinary deck of playing cards. He mentally selects one card out of the three. We ask him to shift these three cards a few times amongst themselves and then point out the card he had chosen. To give another example, without knowing which card a person selects out of the 27 cards of his own choice, simply by dealing the cards one-by-one three times, we put his chosen card at a place specified by him in the set of these 27 cards. There are books and books and videos and videos on card tricks but this book is a bit different. To begin with, the magic involved here is not a sleight of hand. It is solid but simple and pure Mathematics. More important is the fact that we explain the mathematical principles, the reasoning and logic behind each trick. To top it all, we provide the insight and illumination by which, the reader may improvise similar and more general tricks.
The Mathematical concepts used in this Number are very simple and elementary. They are rather Common Sense type. No one need be scared or even concerned about the same. Also, every trick will raise a person higher and higher in the esteem of his Audience (and also in his own).
The first four tricks only involve the math kind of reasoning or logic For example, considering all the possibilities, the if-then, and the what-then type of logic, going forwards to backwards to forwards type of reasoning, and the elimination technique etc.
We have ensured that the
Language is simple. Presentation is lucid. Explanations are self-contained. No prior mathematical knowledge except counting, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, is required. We explain what we use.
But ………..THE FUN IS UNLIMITED.
