Description
Go Set a Watchman: A Novel by Harper Lee | Summary & Analysis

Harper Lee returns to publication in her controversial novel. Occasioning critical commentary from the announcement of its impending publication through the revelation of how it treats characters long familiar from the widespread required reading of the novel it succeeds, To Kill a Mockingbird, the novel returns to many of the same themes of racial tension, small town life, the demands of prescribed femininity and the problems of the American South that the earlier novel treated. It handles them in a manner that shows it is the earlier composition and that it is published unrevised, as some critics point would be the case.

It follows Finch as she returns to her hometown of Maycomb, Alabama, from New York City on an annual visit. While there, she remembers her past in the town, surrounded by family and long-time friends, and uncovers a secret her father, attorney and former legislator Atticus Finch, has kept for decades. In finding that secret, she breaks many of the ties that had held her to Maycomb and kept her a perpetual child despite being in her mid-twenties and reasonably successful in the Big Apple, entering fully into adulthood at long last and coming to a new understanding of her present, her past and her heritage as a Southern woman as the Civil Rights Movement begins.
