Each chapter consists of two sections. The first section contains a collection of English sentences and phrases. Spanish translations are found in the section that follows. You can practice expressing ideas in Spanish or you can improve your ability to translate written Spanish into English – it’s up to you! Use this book on your own, or together with a language-learning partner!

Since this is a book aimed at beginning students, the grammar is intentionally kept simple. Only the present indicative and past preterit tenses are used. This allows you to start expressing useful ideas in Spanish right now! The vocabulary and ideas in this book are varied, fresh, and most importantly, practical! Themes include technology, travel, business, and many others.

As with any translation exercise, there is almost always more than one correct “answer”! The suggested translations in this book were written to be as neutral as possible - that is, translations that would be understood in all Spanish-speaking countries. For that reason, country-specific slang and idioms were deliberately avoided.
