You’re about to discover how to get a step ahead of most test takers.
You are motivated. That’s my favorite kind of student. You are planning to apply to a masters or doctoral program to further your academic and professional goals, but the GRE is a major hurdle to overcome. Many, but not all schools, require the GRE General Test for programs in the humanities and social sciences. Only recently some business schools will allow prospective students to take the GRE instead of the GMAT, which is considered a harder test.

Before you start the process of preparing for the GRE General Test, check carefully with the university, school, or graduate advisor for each school you are considering to find out if this test is required. If the test is required be sure you know the minimum acceptable score and the average score of the students they have accepted recently. Also inquire about whether they require or look at the writing section, whether they care more about the quantitative or verbal sections, and if they have a GPA/GRE formula.

Knowing the exact expectations of the schools to which you plan to apply will help you know how much effort to put into the GRE in general and in certain sections in particular.
Some social science programs want students to be strong in both quantitative and qualitative areas, while some humanities programs put less emphasis on your math scores. A few programs, especially in Colleges of Education, use a formula that may allow a lower GRE score if your GPA is higher. Your job is to know precisely what the schools require. This will help you calibrate your test preparation more precisely. In other words, this test is important but don’t spend more effort preparing than is necessary to meet your goals.
