Title: Transgendered People of India
Subtitle: Forsaken Tributaries
Series: Hijra,the Third Gender

The hijras constitute three billion; a sizeable percentage of India’s population. It’s a common myth that all hijras are hermaphrodites, but studies have proven that of the entire hijra population, only a few are born intersexed. A few others may be are anatomical males, who due to medical reasons, do not attain puberty and develop secondary sexual characteristics. However, most ‘hijras’ are men with a healthy functioning male body who experience gender dysphoria. Therefore, the state of being a hijra has more of a psychological than physical basis. However, to think that gender dysphoria is a ‘mental illness that can be cured’ would be blatantly unfair to all those men who have genuine, persistent feelings of wanting to be female. Since it is taboo in India for an anatomical male to aspires to live as a female, most hijras are likely to say that they were born intersexed. Trisha was frank about having been a boy, but comfort levels such as hers are rare. Most hijras are not as frank or forthcoming. In fact, they may have been emboldened to say even this much because I am a foreigner.

It is uncommon for Indian hijras to be a part of the mainstream and to lead a typical independent existence. Owing to gross tyranny, ostracism and harassment of these people who go against the two established binaries of male and female, hijras live in their own community. Being marginalized is fraught with woes, but at the same time gives rise to an interesting subculture with its own lingo, customs, traditions and so on. ‘Forsaken Tributaries: The Hijras or Transgenders of India’ is a tribute to these individuals who are cast away from the mainstream, yet are crucially attached to it like little tributaries.
