About the book:
The study of megaliths is one of the most fascinating subjects in Indian archaeology. Megaliths are also found in west Asia, west Europe, (erstwhile) U.S.S.R., Sri Lanka and south east Asia.
The author has endeavoured to establish a possible relationship between the south Indian megaliths and those of south east Asia by making a comparative study of their mode of construction and also of the materials found in the graves. Special emphasis is placed on the study of the pottery found in these graves. A note is added on the living megalithism of eastern India and the older megalithic culture of south-east Asia.
South Indian influence on south-east Asia in historical times is a well known fact. This work pushes back the antiquity of south Indian influence on south-east Asia by hundreds of years.
About the Author:
Dr. Hanasoge Subba Rao Ramanna (b.1929) was a senior faculty member of the Department of Ancient History and Archaeology, University of Mysore, India. He obtained his post-graduate degree, in history, in 1951 and was awarded His Highness Sri Jayachamaraja Wodeyar's gold medal for securing distinction in history, in that year. Later, he received his doctorate from the University of Mysore for his thesis "South India as seen by Foreign Travellers (circa 1300-1600)."
He spent three years in the Universities of Hawaii and Chicago as a Graduate Scholar and carried out excavations in south-east Asia under the guidance of Dr. Wilhelm Solheim II, Professor of Anthropology, University of Hawaii.
Dr. Ramanna is the author of the book, 'Historical Method with special reference to problems in Indian History', jointly with Prof. K.A. Nilakanta Sastri. He has contributed a number of research articles to scholarly journals.
