Description
This book tells the inspiring story of the lives of William H. "Tillmon" Jones, Charles D. Creswill, Samuel A.T. Watkins, Samuel Starks and Ephie Augustus Williams, who were members of a Pythian order of knights during Reconstruction and Post-Reconstruction era. These African American leaders battled for self-help through the principles of friendship, charity and benevolence on the heals of the Civil War. They represented knights who were sworn to protect the honor of the home circle, to seek justice for their community and to teach loyalty to one another. Their efforts brought extraordinary prosperity to many persons of color during the Post-Reconstruction period, despite continuing adversity. At the same time, they led a heroic effort to uphold the organization's civil rights and liberties by defending the organization's position in the 1912 U.S. Supreme Court Creswill case. The book is also a genealogical story about WIlliam H. "Tillmon" Jones and his descendants' participation in the Great Migration.
