It is the summer of 1920. As the world recovers from the devastating effects of the Great War, naïve twenty year old Suzie Carroll prepares to leave her village for the first time. Suzie is on her way to the grand stately home of Hanshaw Hall to become a domestic servant to the Derrington family, a dynasty of powerful aristocrats renown from one generation to the next for their ruthless nature. But not long after arriving Suzie falls head over heels in love with the heir to the dynasty, Sir Frederick, a troubled war veteran plagued by nightmares over his hellish experiences at the Battle of Passchendaele.
