As she felt the house as it had been once, light and open and breezy, she hoped she could just as easily feel normal again. The way she had felt before her life had turned into an esoteric surrealistic nightmare. Creating a schism in her heart was the comfort she felt at having someone. Someone in her life that had made her live again rather than existing only through the lives of her characters. Even as he attempted to rescue her, Dani admitted to herself, she desired to endure danger, if bearing further distress meant she got to be with him a little longer. After this weekend, she could see no place in her life for him. She knew there would be no fairytale ending to this story. In tears, she sat, knees cradled into the v-shaped corner of the long deep marble bench of her shower.
With her delicate fingers covering her face, hands against her knees, Dani felt the warm cascading drops of water join her as she wept. As Cat Power began to sing her slow haunting cover of the Duke Ellington classic Troubled Waters, Dani looked up as the steam parted. Victor had opened the shower door and was now kneeling at her feet. Seeing the tears, he said reassuringly, “Dani. It’s going to be okay. Everything is going to be okay. I’m here.” As he said it, she lamented silently, And tomorrow you’ll be gone. I’ll be fine, like always. Alone.
Attempting to smile weakly back, she said, “I know it will be. I’m sorry, I’ll get it together. Can we not talk about the demon or about the rituals? I just need to feel normal again, even if only for a few hours.” Gently raising her chin, Victor dried her tears lovingly as he said softly, “Sure. I would have given you your privacy, but you’ve been in here for almost an hour. I just wanted to make sure you were still alive.” Sounding quite pathetic, with a stuffy nose while trying to giggle, she apologized, “Of course Victor, I’m sorry. How thoughtless of me. Give me a few minutes and I will make you something to eat.” Inhaling deeply, Victor noted with satisfaction, the shower was filled with the smell of her expensive Arlésienne L’Occcitane perfume, causing him to reflect on how long he’d waited and how much he’d sacrificed to bring his true will into focus. He was so very close to achieving his goal.
Using a white fluffy towel as a pillow for her head, laying her back gently against the marble bench, Victor said, “I want to do something normal with you. Something I’d do with you if you were mine.”
