THE UNWANTED PATIENTS OF ROBBEN ISLAND

Robben Island was colonised over 360 years ago during which time it was formerly a prison for dangerous criminals, and later it gained notoriety for its detention of political prisoners, such as Nelson Mandela. For nearly 90 years however, it only housed lepers, lunatics and the impoverished who were sent unwillingly to its infirmary where they could be kept away from the eyes of a discerning society on the mainland.
