My spirit was stirred on the evening of February 26, 2012 as I watched the eleven o’clock news describe the unfolding events that led to the death of Trayvon Martin, a young Black man with a life of promise ahead of him.
That particular news broadcast re-awakened something in me that had first been awakened a decade earlier, when I was contracted to put on empowerment conferences for young men by the Washington, D. C. school district. I orchestrated and produced collaborative events that set the stage for men in the surrounding communities to positively pour directly into the lives of young men – offering them a different reality and giving them new hope.
I saw, felt, and witnessed the difference that these events made. I saw, felt and witnessed how these young men were touched and inspired, and the enduring change and the ripple effect these interactions created. That’s when the acronym “C. A. L. L.†was initially born, with these four letters representing Character, Accountability, Love and Leadership. Now, the need and the opportunity to uplift, inspire and guide our young men is urgently present as never before.
CHARACTER
Stories about integrity, values, and coming into manhood.
ACCOUNTABILITY
Stories about making decisions, choices, perseverance, course correction, and consequences.
LOVE
Stories about giving and receiving love, and the power of love in your life and relationships (in their various forms).
LEADERSHIP
Stories about leading yourself, peers, teams and/or others to new levels of greatness.
