Description

Dear future more mindful, grateful, and hopefully happier person,
First, I’d like to offer a little background and incentive for trying a gratitude journal. Like many, I was caught up in the hamster wheel of life and never even thought about getting off of it because that was ALL I knew. In 2012, I went from having a very busy life that included a healthy husband and two children to taking care of a husband with brain cancer while managing a busy career and two children. I had lots of help as the six months from diagnosis to losing him progressed. I was then and forever will be grateful to all the people who jumped in and offered help. I was actually very surprised. I wish I would have been journaling then but that is the past and I cannot worry about that.
The definition of Mindfulness (as a compilation of Ekhart Tolle’s and Jon Kabat-Zinn’s definition) goes something like this: Mindfulness is an awareness of what is going on in the present moment. It means not worrying about the past and the future which can create stressful situations. Too much stress makes us susceptible to ill feelings and can lead to poor decision making. The present is not right or wrong; it just is.
One way to be in the present is to actually bring awareness of the good things in life. Sometimes, they happen and we are oblivious to them. By journaling our thoughts of gratitude, we make ourselves more aware of the positive and begin to cultivate positive thoughts and feelings.
If this sounds anything like you and what you might be looking for in life than I invite you to take a chance at keeping a gratitude journal which could be a valuable tool toward becoming more mindful and obviously more grateful. If you need more incentive, than I invite you to read Transcending the Daily Muck: My Journey into Mindfulness and How You Can Become More Mindful, Too which is about my realization of being caught in the rat race and my journey towards getting as much as humanly possible out of my life with just a few changes, beginning with my mindset.
You are about to start a journey of 100 days. If they are consecutive days, that is super; if not, it just means you are human and life probably happened to you. Don’t worry, just keep building on the journal day by day and soon you will be able to look back and evaluate your progress. The really cool thing about being mindful is you live in the present and even if you forget to be mindful for a few days you can simply pick up at the present and move on. There should be no worries, no guilt, and no extra stress because you are a work in progress and you need to be kind to yourself as you transcend into a more mindful, grateful, and peaceful person. Enjoy your transformation.
