Description
A very long time ago, tens of thousands to millions of years, a linear accelerator in tidal locked orbit as close as possible to nearby star launched the pod that would eventually land on earth. That pod was identical to trillions of others that were also launched. The linear accelerator was a megastructure hundreds of thousands of miles long drawing power from the star.
It was the original ‘spray and pray†scenario. If enough pods were put down range eventually one would hit something. If enough “somethings†were hit eventually the RIGHT something would be. When that happened it’s tardigrade passengers would activate, began to reproduce and migrate toward the poles of the planet. There, over millennia, they would build an interstellar reef.
When the reef was complete a pilot portal opened and ships sailed through. Their purpose was to integrate the new world into the transit network.
A hundred and fifty thousand years ago the pod landed. The reef was constructed but something went wrong. Up range from Earth a star had serious indigestion and disrupted the network. The portal on earth didn’t stay open very long. A Gamma Ray burster from the sick star sterilized half our planet. One particular service tech, and several thousand others, died.
As luck would have it the service tech’s portable computer was discovered by humans. They had little idea what it was or what it could do but they used it as best they could. Thus were legends of the the supernatural spawned. Over Millenia the computer and possibly other’s like it, were found, lost, found, lost and found, again again, seriously affecting the course of human history.
The latest time it was found was by a combat vet during the Vietnam war.
This is his story.
