Becoming Me (...Again)

There was a time when I believed that life was the single most precious gift anyone could receive. And it took me almost losing mine, three separate times, to realize just how wrong I was. Yes, you read that last part correctly. I was wrong.
You would think that I’d be more grateful for my life, though; especially after cheating Death three times. Please do not misunderstand me. I could not be more appreciative for my life and all that’s in it. Not even if I tried. However, staring into the mirror with the realization that I may never come back to this world showed me something profound. Something that was far more beautiful than life itself. Happiness.
So many of us wander throughout life without knowing what it’s like to be happy. Dreams are cast aside and aspirations are not even tried to be reached. Why? Because we allow others to tell us that we will never reach them. Our dreams we held as children are called ‘Pipe dreams’ with no promise. Too beaten down to challenge that negativity, we cling to fragments. Less is NOT more but it is what’s settled for in our world. In actuality, we deserve to aim ever higher than the sky we behold.
Let me ask you now, why do we allow such oppression to strip us of our dreams? When was it okay to decide that others could choose for us? And above all else… When did we all forsake ourselves?
