Juvenile Delinquency

Abstract

Throughout history, crime has plagued our society, tormenting the innocent and destroying lives of both the victims and the perpetrators. Criminology becomes increasingly interesting and important, however, when looking at the effects of crime on our youth. The growing number of juvenile delinquents throughout the country serves as evidence that we, as the American society, have work to do to better protect our children and their futures. However, in order to begin the fight against criminal behavior, we must understand how young people arrive at such unfortunate fates. Throughout this document, we will examine several theories, which offer strong evidence for the causation of criminal behavior for youth. We will also discuss programs that make a tremendous difference in saving our youth from the path of destruction.

Discussion
We have come to understand that crime is truly a social phenomenon, actively afflicting our society, hence, making room for the study of such behavior known as criminology (Smith, 2010). Upon studying criminology, multiple theories have been established that render explanations for criminal behavior, particularly in our young people. While some research would argue that genetics plays a huge role in the development of criminal behavior, it has been discovered that nature and nurture both work together to mold an individual into the person he or she is destined to become. Nature is a term used to describe the hereditable traits obtained by a person whereas nurture refers to the environment the person is engrossed in. The selected theories we shall examine focus upon the environmental influences of children, which are believed to destine a child for either social success or social failure.
