Nmap introduction

This book teaches you how to work in Nmap - a powerful open-source network security tool. Nmap is the de facto standard for network mapping and port scanning and allows network administrators to discover hosts and services on a computer network, and create a map of the network. You will learn how to install Nmap, how to run and interpret a scan, how to discover open ports, services and operating system versions, and much more.

Here is a list of topics covered in this book:

• Chapter 1 - Nmap overview & networking basics - you will learn what Nmap is. We will go through some basic networking concepts you should be aware of before starting working with Nmap.


• Chapter 2 - Nmap installation - we will go through the process of downloading and installing Nmap on Windows and Linux. We will also describe the process of installing Kali Linux, a popular Linux distribution for penetration testing that we will use for Nmap scans.


• Chapter 3 - Nmap basics - in this chapter we will finally start working with Nmap. We will show you how to run a simple port scan, discover if a host is online, determine a service or operating system version and much more.


• Chapter 4 - Zenmap - if you are not familiar with the command-line, Nmap offers a free GUI called Zenmap. In this chapter will we describe what Zenmap is and how you can run scans in it.


• Chapter 5 - Advanced usage - in this chapter we will show you some advanced usages of Nmap. We will describe how you can trace packets, adjust delay between probes, save Nmap's output, and some other Nmap features.
