Ahmedabad A Society in Transition

This book presents a diachronic examination of the process and dynamics of the change that occurred in the society of Ahmadabad in the wake of British rule until the year 1915. It is an attempt to study the urban history of Ahmadabad in its various social aspects in the transitional period as there is a dearth of historical research in this subject. This analysis is necessary because the response and adaptation of each local community to the modernizing forces generated by British rule is varied, depending on the initial conditions of that community and its socioeconomic and cultural peculiarities.
