“Come here,” Lauren said as she turned around and led the way. She marched to the round counter in the center of the library and opened a drawer. Retrieving a wooden ruler, she turned and faced her naughty little husband with a scowl.
“Hold out your hands, palms up,” she said.
Oh crap! She was going to give him a swat with the ruler!
“Lauren, I just wanted…”
“Excuse me?” she said with irritation.
He thought for a moment. Why fight it? Why make her angrier?
“Yes, ma’am,” he said. He brought his hands out in front of him. They were trembling. He was embarrassed. He was a grown man, for goodness sake.
The ruler came down hard across his palms, forcing him to yelp at the sting.
She gave him another lick for good measure.
“Now, you can stop and eat lunch but then it’s right back to the definitions for you. And, if you get up again without permission I’ll use the ruler on your bottom! Got it?”
“Yes, ma’am,” Hunter answered.
He had no doubt that she meant it.
Just in case he hadn’t quite grasped it, Lauren brought the ruler hard across his bum and popped him a good one as he turned to walk away. She meant business.
