Cloudy with a Chance of Cancer
Description
A cancer diagnosis is enough to deal with, but no one told me and my family how difficult it will be to return to a normal life afterward. I might as well have been searching for the Fountain of Youth. The who, what, when, where, and how to becoming “normal†again seem to be a secret that no one was willing to share.
How was I to know where to go or who to ask if the healthcare system didn’t have the answers I needed? As an ICU nurse, I had a solid understanding of the medical field, yet I couldn’t have felt more lost, and that made me realize something all the more overwhelming: How much more do cancer patients with no medical background have to suffer?
I zeroed in on this aspect of cancer “survivorship†and held on to it like a pit bull. My colleagues agreed that further patient support and education were needed, but we all understood that attempting a change in the healthcare system made a turtle race look like a sprint.
My mission is to help the millions of survivors get the information and guidance they need. We are building support systems and networks that will be readily available for patients and their families.
Let’s make a roadmap for living “cancer free,†because you and your families have already navigated enough obstacles. You shouldn’t have to find your way alone through transition and beyond. Let’s make our voices heard and our destination as unique as each of us.
