A casual encounter in The Tea Room, the haven on which the dejected divorcee Lois Chapman has grown to depend, brings hope of renewed romance until the decadent exploits of her former husband, Peter, and the excesses of his lover, Bluit Legrand, embroil Lois in an unwelcome mesh of intrigue.
An idyllic country life centred on Darley Farm and an insatiable love of money among Chelsea neighbours are united following the news that Peter has suffered a stroke. Confined to a nursing home a second stroke follows from which he fails to survive.
