Refrigeration systems and air-conditioning consume the large quantity of energy. Vapor compression systems are used for the air-conditioning (A/C) of buildings, vehicles and houses now. The solar heat and the waste heat cannot be used directly in the vapor compression systems, which use electric driven compressors to compress refrigerant. Other systems, such as absorption systems, adsorption systems, thermoelectric systems, thermo-acoustic systems, magnetic systems, and compression thermo-elastic systems have been investigated to improve the system performance and efficiency. In this article, the principle of operation of each system is explained easily and the trend in the future will be considered.
