Description
The Mentors—Metamorphosis of thought and form—prologue
The story of the Mentors was created as a means of placing a mirror to humanity, and trying to understand the ‘nature of the beast’. The Mentors though very similar to people on Earth have differences as well. One major difference is their ability to change genders. Gender is probably the most important concept when we view ourselves. How does this change or modify Mentor psychology when this ability becomes a basic feature of their culture.
The similarity between Earth people and the Mentors is so similar that one cannot wonder if we all launched from the same genetic blueprint.
In any case, the Mentors had developed a higher degree of technology than many of the planets they would visit. There were planets with higher degrees of knowledge than the Mentors, though they had not encountered very many.
Similar to living a life on Earth, the Mentors work, play, make love, create, and if at all possible they attempt not to destroy. When an aggressive civilization tried to destroy the Mentor people, they employed a kindness of spirit that many would have trouble relating to.
It is believed that the reality of Mentor civilization is where the Earth is headed, understanding their society may be like placing a mirror on where we will be in the future. That is up to us, and only us.
The consequence of gender in this advanced society would be different than we would be accustomed to. Any individual was a being of thought, any singular concept derived from their psyche was respected without ridicule or contempt. The famous Mentor saying,
‘People are people, and all people are people’. The hinging effect of chance biologic result does not lock an individual into a preconceived or preordained constraint on the expression of their abilities. Size, shape, color or physical prowess and Gender expression, sexual preference, sexuality are only personal considerations relating strictly to the individual sense of self, no more, no less.
Technology on the Mentor world was simply a tool to help enable progression of the most complete life a Mentor can achieve. Their technology did indeed provide many powerful tools.
It was always understood, the concept of gender was a natural approach to the continuation of a species. How each person expressed their individual preferences was of significant relevance only to themselves. Nobody on the Mentor world would pass judgment of conforming regulations on another being, never.
There came a time when the ability to travel between genders became the salvation that saved the Mentor people from extinction. This event was called ‘The great social upheaval’, there were other names used for that episode in Mentor history, however it was labeled, indeed and in fact it had a tremendous significance on their world, their cultures.
One of the favorite endeavors of the mentors was to learn about beliefs on planets and worlds other than their own. Ever since their technology had given them this ability, there was a rush to document all planets they could find and travel to that either supported intelligent life forms, or had classifications of scientific enrichment they could utilize as a learning process. One possible exception was a nearby planet, devoid of all but the life they seeded on it, to be used for Mentorian vacations. It soon became known as ‘The Honeymoon Planet’.
It came a time when travel could assume a speed measured in multiples of the speed of light. A favorite planet of theirs was Earth, a world that they had been visiting since the late Bronze Age, became all that much closer at that time.
It was psychologically, philosophically, and intellectually intoxicating when the Mentors first discovered Earth. There were a multitude of questions the Mentors would pose to themselves as they learned more and more about Earth cultures. Questions that the Mentors resolved long ago in their history and pre-history.
