An adobe house on a farm in the Mountains of Honduras was home for Marlen until tragedy took the life of the young girl’s father. Hard work and the ability to defend herself allowed Marlen to build a meager life for herself in the city -- until the Hurricane arrived and destroyed everything. Without a place to work, or food to feed her children, Marlen undertook a harrowing journey through the desolate mountains of Central America and Mexico, driven on through the will to live and provide for her daughters.

Having made it to Texas, taking jobs for as little as five dollars per day, and collecting rattlesnakes for extra cash, Marlen again looked North to make a new life. When she arrived, started to build anew, and brought her girls to join her, Marlen realized it would not be so simple to let go of her survival instinct and live a quiet life.
