Twenty years have passed since Laova was born beneath a dark moon, crying out in the dead of winter...

Custom forbade naming a child before thirteen moons passed, as many died, as Laova was expected to - but die she didn’t, as some passing god or spirit touched her with their strength.

She came into this cold world in the heart of the long night, and it is during the long night of her Rising-year that she is to discover why.

As her coming-of-age commences, Laova leads the ritual group into the mountains to hunt. Along follows Taren, a boy who’s been like a sweetheart half her life, and like a brother for the rest of it. But also follows Nemlach, a calm, respected man of the tribe who Laova finds herself watching, and wanting.

But a secret is growing within her as the long night begins. Darkness falls, and while Laova tries to pick between the two men that wait on either side, something… someone… calls from Star-Reach.
