Keith Scott, Tommy's father, doesn't return home from the pub one night. His wife swears that Keith is the most considerate and thoughtful of husbands and he'd never leave her to worry. And indeed, soon Keith's body is found; but was he the perfect husband that Lois Scott says he was?
The suspects are as diverse as a local girl who may or may not be a witch and an African scholar writing a critical biography of Charlotte Brontë. But the investigation takes many unexpected turns, and soon WPC Pamela Charles realizes that this case will test her loyalty to her friend Sergeant Adam Blume, who has a secret or two of his own.
Was it witchcraft? Vinegar Tom, an enormous black cat who looms large in the case suggests so, but Pamela suspects it may be something else, equally dangerous: ordinary human passions spilling over into violence.
The Witching Hour is the second Pamela Charles mystery, following A Late Verdict. The third novella, Dinah Dead and Gone, will be published in the summer.
