Description
First printed in 1868, this book is by noted architectural historian James Fergusson (1808-1886). His interest in Indian historical architecture and antiquities helped spur the rediscovery of ancient India. His other works include A History of Architecture in all Countries from the Earliest Times to the Present Day, The History of Indian and Eastern Architecture, and Rude Stone Monuments in all Countries. This book focuses on two new discoveries at the time, Buddhist topes in Sanchi and Amravati, but also gives a background on Tree and Serpent Worship worldwide, as well as common stories and myths regarding them and has eyewitness accounts of rituals and worship in 19th century India.
This book has the book’s original photos and drawings, as well as over 500 footnotes with an extensive list of resources.
