Five years ago, Andrea’s mother left the United States to move back to Puerto Rico. They haven’t seen each other since.

Now, after experiencing an unexpected pregnancy and a somewhat convenient miscarriage, Andrea and her aging rock-star boyfriend, Hank, decide to visit the island in an effort to heal their troubled relationship—and to allow Andrea a chance to reconnect with her mom. But when they arrive, they discover that Andrea’s mother has left once again. This time she’s on vacation, following her own wanderlust and her new tattoo-artist boyfriend. Frustrated but determined to make the best of things, Andrea and Hank check into a once-glamorous hotel. As Andrea begins to tour the island where her mother grew up, she hopes to gain some insight into her family, her past, and her ambivalence about motherhood and the prescribed future it seems to promise.
