Tiffany Rose Adams is a novelist writing under the name Shalymar Jones. Her sixth novel, Bullets for a Badge, is currently on the best seller list and has been optioned for a film.
Jefferson Cassidy is a Detective Sergeant in the LAPD. His partner, Zachary Madison, is killed in an ambush set in motion by Cassidy's C.I., Frankie Newman. Madison's last words to Cassidy are: "Get them." Cassidy promises to do so.
After Madison's funeral, Cassidy finds an envelope lying at the front of his apartment door. He opens it and finds a page torn from a book defining the death of a police officer in L.A. It is identical to the shooting death of Madison. The top of the book page carries the title: Bullets for a Badge. Who is the author? Cassidy checks out the information. Shalymar Jones. Tiffany is a guest on a local TV talk show, invited to discuss her latest novel. During the call-in section, a caller asks if she ever feels guilty about the stories she writes. Does she ever consider the possibility that she encourages real murderers? He tells her she will have to live and learn the hard way.
Upon her return home she finds an envelope at her door. Inside are two news clippings, a typewritten note and a page from her first novel: Dance to the Fiddler's Tune. The older clipping describes a killing in New York matching the one in her book. The newer one, a similar killing in Maine.
When she meets her neighbor's nephew, she finds him attractive. He tells her he is a freelance writer in town to cover the Gasparilla festivities. Jefferson Cassidy recognizes her from her picture at the back of her novels which his aunt collected. "Shalymar Jones, right?" What does she know about Madison's killing?
