With the news of her estranged uncle’s death Jasmine Longbourne decides to impersonate her deceased brother in order to inherit her uncle’s dukedom. The scheme is more inviting than spinsterhood in the country backwaters where she lives as a dependent on her mother’s relatives. She plans to use the dukedom’s wealth to commission a ship that will rescue émigré’s from the French Revolution and bring them back to England. Her own parents and brother were killed in France two years earlier while visiting Paris during the violent outbreaks.

With the help of her cousin Louis and her Merchant friend John Pearton, Jasmine embarks on a journey to impersonate her brother James and inherit the Dukedom of Tersone. But her deception takes a turn for the worse when she is confronted by a distant male heir.
