It gives us great pleasure to present a Text book on Basic Mechanical Engineering .
This introductory text is intended to first year students of Engineering and has been
strictly written according to the New Revised syllabus of various Universities.
In this book we will be mainly studying three main topics :
(i) Thermodynamic Principles Thermodynamics is a basic science related to
heat and energy as such regarded as the core of Mechanical Engineering curriculum.
(ii) Design Consideration Need of design of any component, related stresses,
strains. Material selection for the component to be manufactured, also its Aesthetic
and ergonomic considerations are dealt with.
(iii) Manufacturing Processes This part is intended to make all the students
to become conversant with all the machines which are used in industries like Lathe,
Drilling, Grinding, Welding, Brazing, Soldering, Metal cutting, Power saws, NC/
CNC machines etc.
The knowledge and clear understanding of all these basics is essential to all
branches of Engineering.
Every care has been taken to present the matter in precise and simple language.
Self explanatory figures are included to enable the students to draw the same in the

From a long teaching experience, it has been observed that,
The students should know how much and what should be written in the
