Description ▲
The book contains 33 chapters with 360 pages of over one thousand images and photographs. It presents the first known detailed history in print of every type of rollsign used on the BMT and IND (including Staten Island Rapid Transit) from 1914 with the BMT STANDARDS through the R-38's into the 1970's. Also included are the rollsigns and plate signs used in all of the experimental subway and elevated cars.
Ancillary items include subway marker lights, rollsign boxes, lanterns, train annunciators, station and platform signage, maps, employee badges, miscellaneous advertisements, station entrance globes, unification and integration of the BMT and IND, subway car drawings and lesser known signage used throughout this period.
The intent of this encyclopedia is to preserve in print the now obsolete subway rollsign and some of the lesser known signage and unknown specialties used on the New York City Subway System for a span of sixty years. This book captures the forgotten sights that a typical daily New York City Subway rider saw every time a ride was taken on the subway or elevated lines.
After four years of extensive research and consultation with public transit experts, VOLUME ONE of the ILLUSTRATED ENCYCLOPEDIA OF NEW YORK CITY SUBWAY ROLLSIGNS AND ANCILLARY ITEMS is now available.
