Gracie the Lop-Eared Burro / Jaylyle Redmon

For a number of years my husband and I were members of the Death Valley Forty-niners, a group dedicated to preserving the history and the uniqueness of the Death Valley National Park. On numerous occasions we spotted wild burros in the park. They had descended from the burros brought into the park by miners during the gold rush in 1849. They were not native to the park, and were so adaptable to the tough environment that they were crowding out the native big-horned sheep. With vegetation and water in short supply, it could not happen that the burros be allowed to eliminate the native animals. Therefore, the park was working to move the burros out by adoption to other parts of the country. During one of the times we were in the park we heard the story of Gracie, one of the last Death Valley burros. This is her story.
