This IDC Flash examines the January 7, 2005, announcement by Verizon Wireless that it would become the first U.S. carrier to launch 3G consumer services through handset-based offerings, to be introduced to the market on February 1 as VCAST. Verizon Wireless' offering marks the effective introduction of consumer 3G services to the United States, almost exactly one year after it launched its 3G business services offering through laptop aircards.
