1: Evaluate patients with persistent low-grade proteinuria and identify those who may require a renal biopsy.
2: Prescribe pharmacotherapy to slow the progression of disease in a patient with diabetes mellitus (DM) who has been diagnosed with proteinuria.
3: Utilize the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) criteria for diagnosis of metabolic syndrome.
4: Advise patients with metabolic syndrome about lifestyle changes to reduce body weight and prevent the development of type 2 DM (T2DM).
5: Prescribe appropriate pharmacotherapy for reducing the risks for T2DM and cardiovascular events in patients with metabolic syndrome.
