Description
To get a better perspective of what life was like during the great depression you may want to take a mental trip back in time to the twenties and thirties and perhaps “pretend you’re there and in so doing you can live along with the stories.”  If you do you’ll find the history of the times most intriguing. You’ll be amazed to learn how people developed strong families and strong communities along with strong ethnic cultures, despite their financial hard times.

And most importantly, despite the ongoing hardships families had to endure, you’ll see how everyone survived emotionally, psychologically and financially.
In defining the sources of these stories it can be said that despite their age, almost all in their eighties, many of these people have willingly and openly revealed many in depth life stories of themselves, their families, their friends, neighbors and acquaintances.  They have freely told how the people and the businesses in the community lived and survived during the depression hard times. Each of these individuals has maintained a strong and exceptionally vibrant memory and it was very easy for them to talk about how times were and almost everyone was very enthusiastic in telling their stories. The information flowed freely.

Most of these older generation people were concerned that with the passing of time many of these unique rich rural heritage and culture histories would be gone.
During the interview with these long time residents many said, “The history of the hard times we had to endure is too important to be lost and forgotten.”

Beardsley, Minnesota is the principal community where many of these stories came from.  During the depression years the community population was about 550.  Before the great depression it was fairly vibrant farming community with a functioning business in each building located on every lot along both sides of the two block main street.

The businesses and business people depended on the farm economy for their livelihood and because of good farming conditions most years, until the “dust bowl,” in the most part they were able to make a living.
