Ready Reference Treatise: Nickel and Dimed

Before the narrative was published as a book in the year 2001, an earlier version had already appeared in the form of an article in January 1999, in Harper’s magazine. When she started writing this book, Barbara Ehrenreich was already a very well respected person in the field of journalism.

She mentions in the introduction to the book that the idea of the idea came to her while she was having lunch with the editor of Harper’s one day. The author was from a blue-collar family background, but she herself never believed that she was the one.

The book immediately caught the attention of masses and critics and scholars greatly admired her work. She describes her book as an old fashioned kind of journalism, true undercover reportage.
