First Magyc (Guardians of the Path Book 1) / Nicole DragonBeck,

An ancient Prophecy. A girl with a mysterious power. Will she save magyc, or destroy it?

If a door suddenly appeared in your apartment building, would you open it?

Ria - a perfectly normal twelve year old girl - is hesitant to do so, but the ethereal song spilling from behind the door persuades her to help the Guardian who is trapped behind the door and between worlds. She discovers a land of magyc and music which feels strangely familiar, and gets entangled in the Guardians' search for the missing pieces of the Amber Torch.

This tale starts with Ria, but it's up to all those who keep the Path - Guardians, Witches, assassins, and even Death Himself - to save magyc.

Can they find a way to work together and change the fate of their world before it's too late?

For fans of the Lord of the Rings, The Forgotten Realms, The Shannara Chronices, Earthsea, and Uprooted.

5-star Reedsy review:

DragonBeck’s writing is excellent, in particular her worldbuilding. The story is told in a multi-character perspective, so the reader is able to explore this rich world from different angles; learning new things about Demona as the plot progresses. Her descriptions are very evocative, making it easy to imagine this different, magical landscape. This helps make the world come to life and makes the novel more engaging. DragonBeck also starts the novel from the perspective of Ria, which was also very effective. Like the reader, Ria knows nothing of this other world and serves as a perfect window into it as we learn alongside her. This also makes the information we gather not feel shoe-horned in for narrative purposes but rather Ria and the reader discover it naturally.

The character development is also really good. Ria in particular, grows a lot during the course of the novel and it was really nice to see her become a confident young woman. The Guardians as well all have their own unique personalities and it was really enjoyable to see them interact and witness their relationships. I’m interested in seeing how DragonBeck develops these characters as the series progresses, but in First Magyc she has excelled in characterization.

Overall, I adored this novel. DragonBeck has created a rich, wonderful world filled with interesting characters and an intriguing plot. I loved the political intrigue woven into the plot and find Demona a really fascinating place. Well-written and highly imaginative, The Guardians of the Path series is off to a promising start. I can’t wait to read more in the series.
