You Brew Good Ale: A History of Small-Scale Brewing

Home-brew pubs and small local breweries were once an important part of the local scene in every British town and many a village. But during the 20th century, rapid industrialization and urbanization spawned the larger common brewers and their tied houses that swallowed up innumerable small brewing operations. By the 1960s only four remained. Then the public awoke and the Campaign for Real Ale was born. Today there are more than 200 commercial home-brewing operations going full blast.
