From the supplier: Eight of the 10 largest independent automobile insurance agencies recorded growth in written premiums from 1991 to 1993, after years of losing market share to direct writers and captive agency carriers. Progressive Corp reported the greatest increase of 34.1%, with almost $1.17 billion in 1992, compared to $871.7 million in 1990. Travelers Corp and Aetna Life and Casualty were the only insurers to record declines. Both companies wrote lesser amounts as they had ceased automobile insurance in a number of states.
