As stated in an article by Richard Hayes, the misapplication of these technologies could “exacerbate existing inequalities, and reinforce existing modes of discrimination” (Darnovsky). Abuse of the ability to choose what characteristics an individual’s offspring completely diminishes the idea of individuality. If a parent is able to choose which abilities their offspring possesses then society will no longer be a large group of individual’s but rather a small group of copy cats. Using inheritable genetic modification to “design” babies just further implicates America as socially ignorant and stagnant in terms of moral advancement. Choosing specific characteristics for unborn babies makes the statement that the United States as a whole values certain individuals over others based on outward appearances or social status. Therefore, assumptions that America is still a racist, discriminatory, shallow entity would stand as true. How can a country not see the possibility of devastating effects that could occur as a result of such frivolous use of science?
